Meet Ron Bialke of Ron's Rustics

table cut out.png

Ron worked at a liquor store where many wines came in wood boxes-that's where it all started. Friends and family requested different things and I had access to old wood, dock sections so made a hobby of it. After retirement it has kept me busy working out in garage and going to craft sales. I have 4 children, 6 grandchildren and now 2 great grandchildren so someone is always in need of shelves, toy boxes, and benches

"My Grandma's Hands" by Susan Wardell

IMG_1891.jpg

My name is Susan Wardell and I am the author of “My Grandma’s Hands“. It is a children’s picture book that shows the role of hands in the relationship between grandmothers and grandchildren. It is told in small vignettes and shows how many grandmas use their hands. It is both humorous and then sobering as the book goes full circle. Illustrated by Katrina Smith, the pictures show various ethnicities, but most of all they show the love given by grandmothers.

I was born and raised in St.Paul, MN, and spent many summers in the Brainerd Lakes area while growing up. I married my husband in 1983, and after raising our four children we were fortunate to be able to retire to our lake home. I was inspired to write “My Grandma’s Hands “ while chasing after our oldest granddaughter in our yard . She nearly fell while running down a hill so I grabbed her hand and said, “Take my hand, it is safer when we’re together.” From those simple words the idea was born and the book was written!

Come join us at the Festival and read this book for yourself!

Welcome Emily Johnson

My biggest inspiration as an artist is nature. It informs everything I do. Every time I go outside, I am inspired. Of course, my favorite things to draw and paint are animals. With animals there are so many species so many possibilities and I love them all.

Historical Romance Writer - Rosemary Vaughn

Rosemary Vaughn’s recently released novel Penny for Your Thoughts is set mainly on the Canadian prairies. This historical romance covering several decades follows the life of Penny Ryan, beginning with her father’s life during the Depression and WWII. Growing up and living in the fictional town of Crocus Plains, Penny’s life interacts with Sheryl, Libby and Corbin, characters from Vaughn’s award-winning debut novel Love on the Misty Isles, making the novel a prequel as well as a sequel. Penny encounters opportunities for love, but it never lasts. Will Penny’s life story reconnect her with early friendships and find true love? Will her story return the reader to the Misty Isles? Readers who have urged Vaughn for this second book will discover the answers by reading it. Both books will be available at the Festival. The author is looking forward to the event as it will be the third festival in which she has participated and enjoyed.

Born and raised on the Canadian prairies, Rosemary and her family immigrated to North Dakota in the mid 1970s. The settings of the novels remain in Canada, indicating that you can take the girl out of Canada, but you can’t take Canada out of the girl. A former high school English teacher and professor of Teacher Education at UND, she has drawn on her experience in education, living on the remote islands of Haida Gwaii (the Misty Isles), and growing up on the Canadian prairies to bring authenticity to her novels. Retired, she and her husband spend summers in Minnesota lake country and winters in Florida, thus she has adopted the title “Pine to Palm Writer.” Readers can visit Vaughn on her website at www.rosemaryvaughn.com or Facebook author page at www.facebook.com/authorrosemaryvaughn.

Creative Nutworks - Mother Nature and Imagination

My name is Albert Tanko.  I operate Creative Nutworks in North Branch, MN and this is my story.

cross.jpg

I escaped from communist Romania in 1982.  I landed in Minnesota where I met and married my wife.  My interest in art from seeds and pits began with the black walnut shell cross on my wife's Grandma Roberts' wall in Mindoro, Wisconsin.   When I saw I was fascinated with the intricate pattern in the individual slices of black walnut shell.

Fast forward 20 years.  Our two boys are grown and I had time to experiment with recreating grandma's cross.  I picked a wheel barrel full of nuts and began the task of figuring out the best way to husk, clean, and slice them.  They are definitely a "tough nut to crack".

I began making a few crosses.  After a few months, the initial crosses would break because the glue was not strong enough.   Then began the illusive search for the optimum adhesive.

After making crosses, I began to look for other ways to utilize the black walnut pieces with this beautiful pattern.  I asked for feedback from friends and family.  A friend said these are beautiful but try making something different- like a bowl.  A bowl?  No way!  I did not think it was possible.   I started dreaming of how to create a circle.  Thus, the evolution of the sun catchers.  Next the best method for adding color.   I experimented with different media, but I wanted to create something to hang in the window and dazzle in the sunlight.  Thus the addition of colored glass, which evolved into the use of stained glass.

Eventually I figured out how to make a bowl, serving plates and even a dining room table!  Then how to utilize the scrap pieces left after slicing and assembling.  My wife had purchased a turkey table favor made out of an American walnut with a silk leaf tail.  I told her I could do better and she asked for 22 table favors for Thanksgiving dinner.  Voila!  Enter the Nutwhats into my collection.  They are whimsical critters each with a personality of its own.

I utilize different nuts and pits - peach, apricot, plum, date, buckeye, butternut -- the list is endless.  The array of items that can be created from the nuts, pits and seeds that Mother Nature provides is also endless -- limited only by the boundaries of  imagination.

Your wrist or neck will look beautiful with one of these from Red Sky Beads

Handcrafted jewelry is one of my passions in life.  I have always been drawn to interesting designs of metal and glass beads.  My excitement builds as I begin to put earth-tone color combinations together.  The final piece of jewelry is complete when I can set it to the side knowing satisfaction was achieved. -Becky Korbel-

Meet James Kelley

"I’ve always enjoyed woodworking and started doing it as a hobby 35 years ago. The majority of my professional career involved working with, or on, computers so at the end of the day it was sometimes hard to view the fruits of my labor - with woodworking it's easy to see what I've accomplished.

Five years ago, I decided to start making furniture, mainly rustic looking, but I also learned how to weld and started incorporating metal into some of my designs.  One of the most gratifying things about making and selling furniture are the smiles and positive comments when I have been able to create something special for a customer.

For most of my furniture projects I use Pine, Oak, Ash or Hickory but I've also done kitchen cabinets, sheds and decks.  If you're looking for something unique or special, stop by and let's talk about what you're interested in."
