Evolution Of An Artist: A Carolyn Abbott Retrospective

Carolyn Abbott’s fiber art career began when her mother and great grandmother taught her to sew and expanded with the help of many week long workshops taught by well-known fiber artists.
Evolution Of An Artist, is a retrospective of Abbott’s work, and includes pieces from the 1970’s when she was weaving and spinning, art quilts from 1985 - 2018 and surface design, shibori, and paper laminations from 2009-2018.
Second Saturday Fun At TCAA

Join us for Second Saturday events at TCAA! From 10am to 12pm, meet our featured Member Artist, Karen DeVries, and view some of her unique fiber art works on display. Her work features hand dyes and a technique described as "free" piecing and cutting, which results in very funky and interesting visual pieces. Talk with her and learn more about the process for creating her artwork. From 10 - 11:30am and 12 - 1:30pm, Crossing Arts Kids will be creating handmade instruments. Kids will be creating instruments like thumb pianos out of tin boxes, pan flutes out of straws, and paper plate tambourines. This class is sponsored by Bridge Of Harmony. From 10am - 2pm in our gallery, our current exhibition 'Evolution Of An Artist: A Carolyn Abbott Retrospective' will be on display. This retrospective of Abbott's work includes pieces from the 1970's when she was weaving and spinning, art quilts from 1985 - 2018 and surface design, shibori, and paper laminations from 2009 - 2018. This is a unique opportunity to talk with our local artists, learn about their work, and show them support.

Art Walk At The Arb

The Northland Arboretum and The Crossing Arts Alliance are joining together to bring you the the first Art Walk At The Arb, an inspiring, art-filled experience on the trails. Kids, adults, and well-behaved dogs are invited to join us for a walk in the woods that will inspire, educated, and entertain.
What you'll find: Art stations inspired by nature - Try mud painting, grass weaving, or one of the many other activities! Art in the woods - Follow the trail map to find them all! Artists practicing their art forms - Watch, ask questions, and enjoy. A wine garden - Adults can enjoy a glass of wine in a beautiful setting. Face painting and caricatures. Food trucks and local food vendors. Live music.
Kids 15 and younger are FREE. Ages 16 and up are $5 in advance and $10 at the gate. Tickets are non-refundable! In the case of rain, demonstrations and interactive tables will move indoors. Bring an umbrella and enjoy the art installations on the trail. Tickets will be available at The Northland Arboretum and at The Crossing Arts Alliance, beginning September 1. Funds raised from this event will be split between The Arb and The Crossing Arts Alliance, two fantastic nonprofits who make our community a better place.

Polymer Clay Button Workshop

Make your own polymer clay buttons and beads! Learn from Lily Atwel and Diane Runberg how to make your own polymer clay buttons to use on garments and in other projects. We'll have all the clay, tools, and materials on hand so you can try lots of different techniques. Each students will take home a batch of finished buttons or beads and a good feel for how to use this fun medium. All materials are provided. $35 for TCAA members, $40 for non-members. Needle Felted Sheep Workshop
Wednesday, September 19 | 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
In this workshop, Lisa Jordan will lead students through the process of creating a sculptural form over an armature using the needle-felting process. This class is best geared towards those that have taken a needle felting class before, but determined beginners are welcome. $35 for TCAA members, $40 for non-members. All tools and supplies are included in the class fee, and students will get to keep their mats and needles to use for future felting. Light snacks will be served. Class size is limited to 12 people. Mark Making With Thickened Dyes Workshop
Friday, September 21 | 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
In this workshop, Carolyn Abbott will lead you through the use of thickened dyes. Thickened Procion Fiber reactive dyes can be used for painting, stamping, monoprinting, scraping, silk screening, and drawing on fabric. Create your own fabric to cut up for quilt-making, for whole cloth quilting, or as art cloth. This workshop is a part of the Weaving Waters Fiber Arts Trail. The cost is $65. Sleepy Baby Mouse Needle Felting Workshop

In this workshop, Lisa Jordan will lead participants through the process of making a sweet sleepy mouse. Using a specially barbed needle and fluffy wool, students will create a small sculptural piece using the needle felting method. Lisa Jordan has been needle felting since 2006 and teaches frequently in the Lakes area. Her work can be found on her blog. This workshop is a part of the Weaving Waters Fiber Arts Trail. Spirit Doll Workshop

In this workshop, Debbie Endres will lead participants through the process of creating a spirit doll using twigs and a variety of fabrics, fibers, and trims. Spirit dolls serve as messengers to us from ourselves, providing the exact messages we need to hear, at the exact moment we need to hear them. A variety of materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring along strips of fabric or fibers that they find intersting or inspring. We will be focusing on qualities we would like to inspire or encourage within ourselves while making the dolls, so pieces or totems that are representative may also be incorporated into the design. Alcohol Ink Workshop

Explore this unique medium under the guidance of artist Carole Euerle. Learn to manipulate and blend these vibrant inks to create your own art pieces. $50 for TCAA members, $55 for non-members, $40 of which you will pay to the instructor at the time of the class. 8x8 Art Auction And Gala

The 8x8 Art Auction and Gala is an inspiring evening of art, music, wine, and food that brings the community together in the Gallery setting of The Crossing Arts Alliance, which has a big city feel right in our downtown.
Dozens of area artists contribute artwork on 8” x 8” canvases, which are offered in a silent auction at the event. All proceeds from the evening go to benefit The Crossing Arts Alliance as we work to provide more arts programming to our community.

Events At Jaques Art Center
On August 29 - 30, the Jaques Art Center will be offering a portrait painting workshop taught by accomplished oil painter Tom Page of Cohasset, MN. This workshop is for all artistic skill levels. The cost is $100 for 12 hours of instruction. If you need supplies, Tom will furnish them for $20. In this workshop, participants will be learning how to compose and paint a portrait from start to finish, and they will learn tips and techniques that will transfer to all types of painting. Events At The Cottage Place Art School In Crosslake
On Saturday, September 1st, from 9 - 4 pm, Labor Day weekend, Eileen Kulseth's pottery sale in the Barn will be going on, along with Raku firing demonstrations in front of the barn. Come and check it out! Many pottery styles for sale - torn porcelain, lace pottery, wheel thrown stoneware, Raku pieces, and hand built uniquely styled pottery. We hope to see you there!
Events At The Norway Ridge Restaurant
Judith Kuusisto is the featured artist at the landmark Norway Ridge Restaurant near Crosslake, MN for the 2018 season. Giclee prints of her artwork are framed, ready for purchase, and hanging throughout the restaurant. Currently on display are 27 of her watercolors representing Spring and Summer in Minnesota. She will be updating them later for Fall and Winter. The location is beautiful Kimble Lake in Ideal Corners. Please stop by if you are in the area.
Greater Lakes Area Performing Arts Events
Attention all Whos! Attention all Whos! It's time to perform! There's no time to lose. Auditions for the Pequot Lakes Community Theater musical "Seussical" are set for Monday, August 27, Tuesday, August 28, and Wednesday, August 29. We are looking for 30 actors (10 children and 20 adults) to bring the world of Dr. Seuss to life. Auditioning child actors (ages 9-12) are invited to register at 5 pm, with auditions beginning at 5:30 pm in the high school theater. Auditioning teens (ages 13 - 18) and adult actors are invited to attend from 7 - 9 pm. The audition process will include line reading from the script, dancing, and singing. We are seeking artwork for our upcoming exhibition, Small But Noteworthy. The theme is small art, big ideas. This two-day event will showcase visual art (9"x9" or smaller, 9"x9"x9" 3D) in various small businesses, arts organizations, and studios in the town of Little Falls, MN. Other activities include a hip-hop concert, spoken word workshops and events, poetry open mic, Zine sale, and more. Events At Brainerd Public Schools
Brainerd Public Schools Archives opened Chief Bender and Bullet Joe, two of Brainerd's three major leaguers, and consists of woodblock prints, two large sized paintings and two "Hall of Fame" like metal reliefs - made from melted down Briggs and Stratton engines, all by former Brainerd Public Schools art teacher Maurice Dwayne Olson, at Brainerd High School. This exhibit is made possible by the generosity of the Crow Wing County Historical Society, and the creative talent of the artist, Mr. Olson, and is exhibited in the large display case at the north end of the BHS North Campus, in the entry area to the BHS media center. The general public is welcome to view these pieces after 3:10 pm to early evening each school day. Please check in at the BHS welcome center first. Brainerd Public Schools Archives announces its call for all BPS faculty - including retired and former faculty - to submit applications to participate in the exhibition of two and three-dimensional art executed by faculty and suitable for public display within exhibition spaces at BHS from approximately September 15 - November 15, 2018. There is no requirement that submitted work be "new" work. The deadline to submit applications is June 1, and the deadline to deliver completed work is September 1. "Nick DeVries, New Works In Clay", an exhibition of pottery by Nick DeVries will be on display at Ripple River Gallery August 15 - September 16. In his newest work, the natural world outside his window takes root: the red barn in his backyard, the red and white pines that tower over his home studio, the oak and maple-filled backyard. It is fitting that his everyday view would make its way onto the pots.
Nick DeVries is a fiscal year 2018 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Brainerd Writers Alliance Events
The Brainerd Writers Alliance meets on the third Saturday morning of each month, from 10 am - 1 pm, at the Brainerd Public Library. Visitors are welcome to attend. Monthly meetings include a talk on a relevant writing topic and brag time. Let us know ahead of time if you have work to read for critique or just to share. Annual dues are $15. Members can read their work and receive critiques. Members receive discounts on BWA events.
